Pune: the back story
The back story
About Pune: the back story
Pune, beyond the Western Ghats, was the seat of the Peshwas. Its best-known sights are Shaniwar Wada, the Peshwa palace begun in 1736, and the Aga Khan Palace, built in 1892 and now a museum of Gandhi’s life (Pune district; Maharashtra Tourism).
Shaniwar Wada
The palace was begun in 1736; a fire in 1828 destroyed it, leaving the fortified walls and spiked doors. A light and music show runs daily (Pune district).
The Aga Khan Palace
Built in 1892 by Sultan Muhammed Shah Aga Khan III, it is now a museum of Gandhi’s life (Maharashtra Tourism; Pune district).
Shaniwar Wada has a light and music show every day.
Our advice: drive via Lonavala and stop in the Ghats.
