Christmas in Mumbai: Bandra’s lights, Midnight Mass and New Year by the sea

Mumbai’s festive season runs from the lamps of Diwali to the stars of Christmas. In Bandra, paper star lanterns hang from balconies and Hill Road fills with Christmas stalls, the faithful climb to Mount Mary Basilica for Midnight Mass, and the city sees the New Year in along the sweep of Marine Drive.

From Diwali to Christmas

Mumbai’s festive season begins with Diwali, the festival of lights, on Sunday 8 November 2026, when homes and shops are lit with diyas and lanterns, rangoli patterns are drawn at doorways and fireworks crackle across the city. By December the lights turn to Christmas, and the dry, warm winter makes it the loveliest time of year to visit.

Christmas in Bandra

Bandra, with its old Catholic villages and seaside churches, is the heart of a Mumbai Christmas. Paper and tinsel star lanterns hang from balconies, cribs appear in the lanes, and Hill Road’s stalls sell decorations, plum cakes and the traditional sweets of East Indian and Goan Catholic homes: kulkuls, neureos and rose cookies.

On the hill above Lands End, the Basilica of Our Lady of the Mount, Mount Mary, a neo-Gothic church built in 1904, holds a Christmas Carol Night in December and a Christmas Eve Mass that draws people from across the city. Our advice: arrive early, as the basilica fills well before midnight.

New Year’s Eve by the sea

On New Year’s Eve, crowds gather along Marine Drive’s Queen’s Necklace and at the Gateway of India to watch the year turn over the Arabian Sea, while the grand hotels of Colaba and Nariman Point hold their own galas. Book hotel and restaurant celebrations early: they sell out weeks ahead.
