About Colaba and the Gateway: the back story
Colaba is Mumbai’s southern tip: the Gateway of India and the Taj Mahal Palace on Apollo Bunder, the boats to Elephanta and Alibag, and lively streets leading inland.
The waterfront
The Gateway of India faces the harbour, with the Taj Mahal Palace beside it; ferries to Elephanta leave from the jetties.
Eating and drinking
At the Taj: Sea Lounge for tea, Golden Dragon for Sichuan cooking and the Harbour Bar, serving since 1933.
Start early at the Gateway, before the crowds.
Our advice: take the first ferry to Elephanta, then lunch back in Colaba.
